Rise and Reach
Embedded in gravel, used to being
trampled on, walked over, missed
until today when the ball of my foot
noted its rise and reach to be seen,
a heart-shaped stone paused me.
I picked it up, carried it, rubbed
with my thumb this conglomerate
of roughness,
this imperfect form.
And I talked with my own heart
all through my walk,
asking how it came to be like this–
hardened, heavy, hurt,
but also strong, faithful, beating
its truth and sorrow and hope
through my body
and beyond.

Today was my 75th birthday… and as I walked on this magnificent day, I found myself to be overwhelmed by deep gratitude for my good and rich life: family, friends, my health, laughter, this magnificent place called Brookgreen Gardens, the wonder and awe all around me, the privilege of travel, my church, this wonderful community of Wonder Walkers, and so much more! Thank you, Dear Lord!

A QUIET PLACE
There is a quiet place, far from the rapid pace
Where God can soothe my troubled mind
Sheltered by tree and flower
There in my quiet hour with Him, my cares are left behind
Whether a garden small, or on a mountain tall
New strength and courage there I find
Then from this quiet place I go to prepare to face
A new day with love for all mankind
Whether a garden small, or on a mountain tall
New strength and courage there I find
Then from this quiet place I go to prepare to face
A new day with love for all mankind
