Inner Song

Perhaps you, too, have heard it,
despite the cacophony,
a song that rises in you—
a tune you’ve never learned
that somehow owns you
the way white owns winter,
the way breath owns
our lives. Perhaps you, too,
have marveled as the tune
spills forward, guiding you,
keeping you company
so that even when alone,
you know for certain
you are not alone.

Remembering words from The Inner Song I walked through the park, exploring the sense  of alone and together.  A tree in the foreground, arms spread wide, with a forest of support in the background.  I walked out onto a matting of dried spartina in the marsh, and stood next to a dead tree, standing bare.  The scene depicted “alone,” and I felt it. But as I looked out across the foggy marsh, I noticed an egret’s white just above the grasses. Then further north, another.  I smiled, and realized I could see these two; how many other creatures were also here, sheltered in the grass?  A message:  stand still, open, notice how even in the starkness, you are not alone.
