Compassionate Retreat: Reflections on Wonder – April 11, 2020

Could I?

If I could

I would be a mockingbird

making it up as I go, singing

so many songs in my heart.

If I could

I would be a neon green anole

crawling close enough to earth

to hear the secrets of crickets.

If I could

I would be a calico beauty

hiding her wild behind a coat of

indifference, fully present

seeming to be elsewhere.

If I could

I would be a live oak, rooted yet

keeping the sky company

carrying in its trunk

stories of the ages.

If I could

I would be

clouds fluffing up

spilling over

with drops forever

of peace.

One of my favorite lines from The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint Exupery:
“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye.”
I attach three photos that speak to me – one from Brookgreen’s outdoor gallery – the woman reaching out to the pool of water – perhaps seeing something in her reflection – perhaps reaching into the depths of the water; one from the marsh, and one of my granddaughter Blake – I love her expression – always full of wonder.

One day we started walking around 7:15 am, the weather just perfect. The first thing we see : our neighbors birdhouse has a bird peeking out of the little hole….a new beginning….then we walked on the golf course now that all the golf courses are closed we take advantage of that, beautiful paths and lots of azaleas….all of a sudden a very loud noise…..really very loud….the alligators mating call…Like someone was starting an old lawnmower…..and there were several….more little ones on the other side of the pond…..Birds were singing every where and it was topped of with a totally white squirrel close to our home.

Lets’ see what tomorrow brings…..for today we got our share of a very good feeling inside…..

I know God won’t give me more to do than I can handle, I just wish he didn’t trust me so much – Mother Teresa

I know what we are being asked to do right now is hard, it is not our  normal and it makes us uncomfortable. It is during moments of quiet, such as sitting in silence on my porch in the early morning light,  that I find the greatest peace with  all that is happening and all that is being asked of us. Wishing you all moments of quietude, peace and gratitude. Love you and miss you,
Denise P.

“My” Trees… These small pin oaks at the marina in my neighborhood never cease to amaze me and make me smile. I thought they were dead after a hurricane several years ago… but back they came from their distress. Every season their beauty, simplicity, frailty and strength inspire awe.  In spring – magnificence against the blue sky and cotton clouds…

  1. I love the April 11 blog both pictures and text. Amy’s poem catches my heart. Each reading unveils another image, another thought. That is what good poetry is suppose to do I think.
The photographs find a place to live immediate which is delightful.
