Brookgreen Gardens — Sept. 29, 2017

I will still walk a little further if you will walk beside me. The journey toward peace has taken much longer than we both may have thought. Did we think that by this time we would be closer than we are? Probably. Our first hopes were so innocent. But now we know the path to peace is long and arduous, an uphill climb. After so many disappointments it is not easy to keep going. But I will walk a little further, if you will walk beside me. I will not give up or turn back. I will stay with you until we rejoice together.  — Steven Charleston

The strength we can rejoice in when we know we are not alone.

The opening reflection inspired me to think about the importance of community and relationships as we journey through our lives — particularly through the difficult times of chaos, darkness and struggle. I walked to the Native American Women statues who are working together to live their lives in community. I was a bit overwhelmed as I observed the shadows dancing on each of them– one on her “heartspace”, the second on her legs, and the third on her torso. They were each alive with the energy of the light and shadow, each contributing her unique gifts to build community.

The next sign of community was the scores of butterflies that adorned the lantana. They flitted from flower to flower to savor each small drop of nectar. They seemed to be  drinking in from the perspective of “abundance” rate then scarcity. If only we could live our lives as human beings from this perspective of abundance and sharing in community — I have all I need, and really more than I need.
