Brookgreen Gardens — April 21, 2017

Sabbaths, 1999 VII (Wendell Berry)

Again I resume the long
lesson: how small a thing
can be pleasing, how little
in this hard world it takes
to satisfy the mind
and bring it to its rest.

With the ongoing havoc
the woods this morning is
almost unnaturally still.
Through stalled air, unshadowed
light, a few leaves fall
of their own weight.

The sky
is gray. It begins in mist
almost at the ground
and rises forever. The trees
rise in silence almost
natural, but not quite,
almost eternal, but
not quite.

What more did I
think I wanted? Here is
what has always been.
Here is what will always
be. Even in me,
the Maker of all this
returns in rest, even
to the slightest of His works,
a yellow leaf slowly
falling, and is pleased.

As I began walking today’s reading got me to thinking about cycles of life, a yellow leaf slowly falling, new green plant life next to old dry marsh grass, and fallen trees among new spring growth. We don’t always have control of when beginnings and endings happen in our own life but if we stay open to the wonder of it all may we over and over again find rest.

Today I walked in gratitude… grateful that my Mom is feeling better… grateful for the glorious beauty at Brookgreen… grateful for the air and blue sky and ever so green cedar boughs emerging… grateful for our Walking in Wonder community… I breathed in the peace of this day.

Tranquil green on blue

Gratitude abounds and swells

How wondrous this life.

Instead of our usual tea and cookies, we indulged in fresh bread made by Sue and jam made by Jill. What a treat! — Photo by Nancy L.
