Mepkin Abbey – Nov. 4, 2016

We made a special trip to Mepkin Abbey in Monck’s Corner, SC on a glorious November day.  The beauty and serenity and resilience of Mepkin, the chanting monks, and the  gardens gave us a sense of peace and hope in these challenging times.

Since I am posting this entry after the election, in the spirit of healing and peace, I offer one of my favorite prayers, attributed to St. Francis…

Acceptance and resilience…  we are being asked to reach deep down into our souls and find the love and light of God to share with all whom we encounter.

With the upcoming election, I began my walk focused on peace and unity… praying for our country to come together after the contentious election was over. I felt a deep sadness over the hatred and bigotry that had been unleashed. The beauty and serenity of the Mepkin Gardens was overwhelming… and it filled me with hope as I thought about cycles that come and go in history, while nature and the unconditional love of God go on and on and on. This hallowed land at Mepkin witnessed the Revolutionary War, housed a slave owner and his abolitionist son, has survived severe storms, and now is home to the Trappist monks… Resilience and hope…
