Pawleys Island, South end, sunset walk – April 15, 2016

One thing was on my mind and in my heart as I walked the beach tonight in the very windy, gray cool night.

A news story I had just heard seemed to me to have the same contrasts that nature was showing. Two men, one a young, white police officer completing his quota for drug arrests, fabricated the facts of an arrest of a young black man. Although totally innocent, the young black man spent 4 years in jail, only released after a confession by the white officer. Strangely, they both returned to rebuild their lives in the same small town, ending up in the same café working together. When the innocent man was asked if he forgave the officer, he said I forgive BOTH of us. Today they are the very closest of friends — sharing much love. Together, they travel across America sharing their story of the power of forgiveness and redemption.

So too the gray clouds broke apart at sunset, shining light and color and a promise of sun and warmth tomorrow.

Today I walked with the broad intention of being open to the wonder around me. The day had been very gray, with a strong, cold wind that chilled the bones. I expected more of the same grayness at sunset. Instead, the sunset peaked through in subtle pinks and yellows and blues — all against a blue, gray sky. The sky was absolutely beautiful, both on the creek side to the west and on the ocean side as the sun was reflected to the east! This wondrous sky was accompanied by a chilling,  swirling wind — a reminder to be “open to it all” just as it is, rather than have expectations either positive or negative.
